About Urmi Banerjee

The cook, writer, and person behind CalorieMatterss.com — a healing kitchen for IBS-friendly, low-FODMAP, high-protein Indian food.

Hi, I'm Urmi — the cook, writer, and soul behind CalorieMatterss.com. This blog was born from my own life: living with IBS, hormonal imbalance, and fibroids, while cooking real Indian food on a real budget.

For years the internet gave me scattered advice — a tip here, a remedy there — but never one place where gut-friendly eating, Indian kitchens, and honest healing came together. So I built the blog I wished existed. If you've searched to learn more about Urmi Banerjee, this page is where my story begins.

How It All Started

Back in 2023, I was searching for non-veg IBS recipes. The next day it was gut-friendly Indian drinks. Then weight-loss meals that actually work for women over 40 — not generic ones. Everything I found was fragmented, so I asked myself a simple question:

"What if I create the blog I wish existed?"

So I did. This isn't just an "About" section — it's the story of a woman navigating gut pain, budget survival, and emotional recovery, one meal at a time.

Why I Created CalorieMatterss

CalorieMatterss is more than a blog — it's my healing kitchen and digital diary. Every post comes from lived experience, small victories, and honest trial and error. Here's what I share:

  • Simple IBS-friendly Indian recipes — low-FODMAP and gentle on the gut.
  • Weight-loss meals that don't trigger bloating — both vegetarian and non-veg.
  • Herbal remedies for digestion, fibroids, and hormonal balance.
  • Mental-health reflections, especially around CPTSD and recovery.
  • Budget wellness tips rooted in everyday Indian households.

I'm not a doctor or a certified expert — I'm someone who lives this life. From khichdi to quiet healing, everything here is raw, brave, and honest.

A Little More About Me

"Urmi" means sea waves — and that's the rhythm of my life: flowing, crashing, and rising again. I've lived through emotional wounds, silence, and inner battles. Cooking became my therapy; writing became my strength. This blog is the home I built for myself — and now for you.

Learning to Listen to My Body

For as long as I can remember, my body couldn't handle dairy. Every time I drank milk or ate cheese — our chena — I would feel sick and throw up. But as a child, no one understood it. I was told I was just being difficult, throwing a tantrum. The doctors said much the same. Looking back, I don't blame them — they simply didn't know. First-time parents in those days weren't given the information, and the doctors around them weren't updated either. Even today, so many still aren't.

So the intolerance stayed with me, quietly, for years. And because no one named it, I grew up eating and drinking everything, never taught that food is connected to the body and the mind. Eventually that caught up with me — fatty liver, and a body that had been ignored for too long.

In our house there's still a saying: "whatever is on your plate, you finish it." And in many ways, that gave me a good relationship with food — I'm not a fussy eater, I appreciate what's in front of me. But it also meant I never learned to ask what my own body actually needed.

Today, things are different. Parents now know when a child has a peanut allergy or any intolerance, because doctors are better equipped and families have more knowledge. I have no regret about my own past — I can't go back and change it. But I can change what I do now: I can give my body proper nutrition, keep my mind open through knowledge, and finally pay attention to what I eat.

There is a real connection between the body and the mind. I feel it now — clearly. And more and more, I'm learning to simply do what my body tells me it needs.

My Food Philosophy

I believe good food should do more than taste good. It should care for you.

Healing

Gut-soothing first, not just tasty.

Accessible

Made with ingredients from Indian kitchens.

Comforting

Because gut healing is soul healing too.

Budget-friendly

Healing should never feel out of reach.

From simple sabzi to protein-rich khichdi and herbal hormone drinks — everything here is tested, real, and made to fit an everyday life.

More Than Food: It's About Life

At CalorieMatterss, I write beyond recipes:

  • Living with fibroids without rushing into surgery.
  • Managing gut symptoms when doctors dismiss you.
  • Budget-friendly meals that still feel nourishing.
  • Coping with mental health inside traditional Indian households.

You're not alone — and you don't have to heal alone either.

The Other Side of Me

There's another part of my story I like to share, because it's all one life. For 23 years I worked in things that never truly fit me — sales, marketing, insurance. But the one thing people always came to me for was fixing the computer, the settings, the spreadsheet. When my health forced a complete reset in 2023 and I began healing through food, I also finally started doing the work my soul was actually connected to: building on the web.

That became WhiteBalanceAI — my little studio where I help founders and small businesses build their web presence. Two very different worlds, one person doing what she's meant to do. If you're curious, you can find that side of me at whitebalanceai.com. I'm joyful about it, and I stand by every bit of this journey.

With love,
Urmi 💛
